Diwali Story
Diwali, also known as Deepavali or the “Festival of Lights,” is one of the most celebrated traditions of South Asia. At its heart, Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. While its meaning is shared across communities, the stories connected to it vary from region to region, making it a truly diverse festival.
In North India, Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, when the city was illuminated with rows of lamps. In South India, it commemorates Lord Krishna’s triumph over the demon Narakasura. In Western India, especially Gujarat and Maharashtra, Diwali is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi and also marks the New Year. In Eastern India, it coincides with the worship of Goddess Kali. For Jains, it is the day Lord Mahavira attained enlightenment, and for Sikhs, it is observed as Bandi Chhor Divas, remembering Guru Hargobind Ji’s release from captivity.
No matter which story is told, Diwali is celebrated with lights, prayers, feasts, sweets, and community gatherings. It is a moment of renewal — a time to honor prosperity, strengthen family bonds, and spread joy through light and togetherness.

Heidelberg Diwali 2025
This year, Heidelberg comes alive with the colors, rhythms, and lights of Diwali on Saturday, 18 October 2025, at Kulturhaus Rohrbach. Following the success of last year’s celebration with over 140 guests, Heidelberg Diwali 2025 will be even bigger, bringing together more than 30 artists from across Germany and India for an evening filled with cultural storytelling, music, dance, and community joy.
The program begins with a Diya Lighting and Aarti Ceremony, followed by a rich lineup of classical Bharatanatyam and Kathak performances, folk traditions like Garba and Rabindranritya, Bollywood and fusion acts, and a soulful set by renowned musicians from India. The evening continues with a sparkler (Phuljhadi) celebration, a highlight for families, and concludes with a live band and open dance floor to bring everyone together.
No Indian festival is complete without food — and the evening includes a full-course Indian dinner with starters, mains, rice, naan, dessert, refreshing drinks, and even a few surprise items.

The evening officially begins with the inauguration ceremony, followed by the Aarti — setting the spiritual tone for the festival of lights.
After this, the stage will come alive with an exciting lineup of performances: classical, semi-classical, folk, and Bollywood music and dances, along with surprise acts by talented artists from across Germany and India. Together, these moments will create an unforgettable cultural experience.
Together, we’ll light traditional sparklers (Phuljhadi) and capture this magical festival moment with a group photo — a memory that will last long after the lights fade.
Enjoy a delicious full-course Indian dinner, featuring both vegetarian or non-vegetarian options. From starters to mains, sweets, and drinks — everything has been carefully chosen to give you the flavors of an authentic Diwali feast. (See our detailed menu in the section below.)
To close the night, the Jal Tarang band will set the stage on fire with live music from diffrent parts of India. The dance floor will open up with beats and melodies that blend tradition with celebration — the perfect way to end Diwali with energy and joy.
